PLN prepares $15 b to build 11,000 megawatt gas-fired power plants

State electricity firm PT PLN said Wednesday that it would need to set aside US$15 billion (Rp 132.71 trillion) to build several natural gas-fired power plants with a total capacity of 11,000 megawatts by 2019.

PLN director for planning and technology Nasri Sebayang said his company was very eager to materialize the plan to reduce its dependence on oil-based sources of primary energy amid soaring global prices.

“However, we’re not sure that we’ll receive sufficient gas supply to fire the planned power plants. Even currently, we only receive 60 percent of our total needs,” he told reporters after speaking at the 2011 Pacific Energy Summit in Jakarta.

He also said that PLN currently operated 5,233 power plants across the country with a total capacity of 24,960 megawatts and 22 percent of them, or 1,151 units, were generated by utilizing natural gas as energy.
